PGIMER witnessed the much-anticipated inauguration of the Immediate Trauma Life Support (ITLS) Hands-on Workshop cum Continuing Medical Education (CME) program by Prof. Vivek Lal, Director PGIMER today.
This significant event, organized under the aegis of the Society of Trauma Anesthesia and Critical Support (STACC), marks a pivotal step in advancing trauma care education and practice and aims to enhance the skills and readiness of medical professionals in handling acute trauma cases.
In his inaugural address, Prof. Vivek Lal, the Chief Guest on the occasion, emphasized the unpredictable nature of trauma care, stating, “Trauma care comes uninvited and unannounced. When faced with a sudden emergency, you must gather yourself, maintain your composure, and be ready to act swiftly and decisively. Your ability to stay composed and lead by example can make all the difference in saving lives during a trauma situation.”
Prof. Lal delved into the practical aspects of trauma care, highlighting the critical need for maintaining order amidst the chaos that typically accompanies acute trauma situations. “The first complication of acute trauma is chaos. Mitigating this chaos is crucial to providing effective care. Keep calm, direct your team, and ensure everyone knows their role,” he advised.
Drawing from his extensive experience, Prof. Lal shared real-life incidents to underscore the importance of practical skills and hands-on experience. He remarked, “Practical skills and hands-on experience are vital. Remember, in trauma care, your basics must be in place. Practicing your skills on patients is the key to being effective in real-life emergencies.”
Prof. Lal concluded his address by encouraging participants to stay grounded and continue honing their skills. “In trauma care, your ability to stay composed and lead with confidence can save lives. This workshop is an opportunity to refine your skills and ensure you are prepared for any emergency that comes your way.”
Commending the progress made by the Advance Trauma Centre incepted by him in 2011 , Dr YK Batra, former head of the Department Anesthesia and intensive care on the occasion stated, “The ITLS Hands-on Workshop cum CME at PGIMER is a testament to the institute’s commitment to advancing medical education and improving trauma care standards, ultimately aiming to save more lives in critical situations. “
Prof. Kajal Jain, the Organizing Chairperson of the Workshop, elaborated, “The ITLS workshop is designed to provide participants with comprehensive training, including hands-on sessions and simulations that mimic real-life trauma scenarios. These sessions aim to equip medical professionals with the skills needed to manage acute trauma cases effectively, ensuring they can provide the highest level of care in critical situations.”
Detailing further, Prof. Jain stated, “The event has attracted a diverse group of participants, including trauma surgeons, anesthetists’, emergency medicine doctors, and critical care specialists.”
Over the next two days, they will engage in intensive training sessions, gaining valuable insights and practical knowledge from leading experts in the field.
