Sidhivinayak time’s Shimla Panjab University on Monday played host to the Bharat Maha EV Rally, acclaimed as the world’s longest electric vehicle rally, as it reached the campus on its 98th day of its nationwide journey. The rally was formally flagged off by PU Registrar Prof. Y.P. Verma in the presence of faculty members, staff and research scholars, marking another significant milestone in the campaign promoting sustainable mobility. Conducted under the aegis of the International Federation of Electric Vehicle Association (IFEVA), the rally is being held with the support of Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Shri Nitin Gadkari and Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Shri Piyush Goyal. The initiative has witnessed widespread participation from Central and State Governments, Transport Departments, electric vehicle manufacturers, MSMEs, dealers, distributors and leading academic institutions across the country.

Having already traversed 27 States and eight Union Territories, the rally has covered an extensive route across India and has also extended its journey to neighbouring countries including Bhutan and Nepal. During its course, the rally has been flagged off by several Chief Ministers, Governors and Ministers at various locations, reflecting strong institutional and governmental support for electric mobility.The key objective of the Bharat Maha EV Rally is to create awareness about electric vehicles, address public concerns related to range, charging and performance, and showcase the practicality of long-distance travel using EVs. Through on-ground interactions, demonstrations and test drives, the rally highlights the rapid expansion of EV infrastructure and the growing maturity of India’s electric mobility ecosystem.
At Panjab University, students and scholars actively interacted with the rally team, participated in discussions on sustainable transportation and experienced electric vehicle test drives. Many expressed optimism about the comfort, convenience and environmental benefits offered by EVs.The rally also serves as a platform to assess the current state of electric vehicle adoption in India. By engaging with policymakers, industry leaders, academic institutions and consumers, the initiative is gathering valuable grassroots-level feedback that is expected to support future policy development and strategic planning in the EV sector.
Led by Dr Rajeev Mishra, President, Dr Shailendra Saroj, Chairman, and other senior members of the IFEVA team, the Bharat Maha EV Rally underscores India’s growing commitment to clean and sustainable transportation. The findings and insights generated during the rally are expected to play a vital role in shaping the future roadmap of electric mobility in the country
