The Department of Pediatrics at PGIMER Chandigarh observed World Autism Awareness Day 2026 today with a heartfelt program themed “Autism Beyond the Clinic: Lived Experiences of Families Through a Social Pediatrics Lens.” Aligned with the global message “Autism and Humanity – Every Life Has Value,” the event aimed to promote a neuroinclusive society that celebrates human diversity.
The event was graced by Dr. Sanjay Jain, Dean of PGIMER, as the Guest of Honour. In his address, Dr. Jain underscored the critical need for early identification, inclusive education, and robust support systems for children with autism and their families. The gathering brought together a multidisciplinary team of pediatric neurologists, psychologists, and educators, including prominent figures like Ms. Kavita Das (Director Principal, GD Goenka School) and representatives from the Rotary Club and Chandigarh Citizen Foundation.
A powerful highlight of the day was the “Voices of Autism” Story Circle, where mothers and caregivers shared their personal journeys. They spoke candidly about the challenges of navigating multiple therapies, financial strain, and the social stigma that often accompanies caregiving. Adding a touch of inspiration, a young adult with autism—born at PGIMER and now a successful YouTuber running the channel “Cricket Ki Awaaz”—shared his journey, symbolizing hope and the vast potential of neurodivergent individuals.
The celebration included a ceremonial cake-cutting to symbolize unity and diversity. Experts at the event emphasized that true support for autism must extend beyond medical clinics into compassionate classrooms and communities. The Rotaract Club of AIMS Mohali also pledged its continued commitment to fostering awareness and acceptance. The program concluded with a collective call to move from mere awareness toward full social inclusion and empowerment for every individual with autism.
