Chandigarh/New Delhi: Dr. Suresh Kumar Angurana, Additional Professor in the Division of Pediatric Critical Care, Department of Pediatrics, Advanced Pediatric Centre (APC), PGIMER, Chandigarh, has been conferred the prestigious Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar – Vigyan Yuva (Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award in Medicine) for 2025. The award was presented by the Hon’ble President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, at a ceremonial function held at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi.
Dr. Angurana is among 15 Vigyan Yuva awardees nationwide, recognized for his outstanding contributions to pediatrics and pediatric critical care. His pioneering research has significantly advanced the understanding of the gut microbiome in critically ill children, particularly its role in infection prevention and modulation of inflammation.
Dr. Angurana made key contributions by characterizing pediatric COVID-19
A leading researcher in probiotic therapy in pediatric intensive care, Dr. Angurana has led several landmark clinical trials. His studies published in Critical Care Medicine demonstrated that multi-strain probiotics reduced gastrointestinal candida colonization, candiduria, and systemic inflammation in critically ill children, leading to improved clinical outcomes. A large before–after study involving 720 children further established the role of routine probiotic use in preventing invasive candidiasis.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Angurana made key contributions by characterizing pediatric COVID-19 and Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C) in India. His work informed national clinical guidelines and enhanced understanding of pediatric inflammatory disorders through systematic reviews and comparative studies, including MIS-C and severe dengue.

Dr. Angurana has also demonstrated leadership in major national and international collaborative research projects, including the ICMR-funded ReLiSCh-M Trial, studies on MIS-C therapies, and the development of the Indian Children Length-Based Tape (InChiTape) for pediatric resuscitation. His international collaborations include the S-PIC study (Singapore) and PRoVENT–PED on ventilation practices in critically ill children.
With over 240 publications, more than 60 national and international conference presentations, and contributions to over 20 book chapters, Dr. Angurana’s work reflects sustained academic excellence and global impact. He has previously received several prestigious honors, including the Dr. H.B. Dingley Memorial Award (ICMR), Dr. Tulsi Das Chugh Award (NAMS), Major General Amir Chand Gold Medal, and the Prof. D. Subrahmanyam Gold Medal.
