CHANDIGARH: In a major boost to organ transplantation in the region, Prof. Vivek Lal, Director of PGIMER, announced that a standalone Dedicated Transplant Centre at the institute will soon become a reality. Speaking as the Chief Guest at the inaugural session of the ISTS Annual Conference 2026, Prof. Lal committed to strengthening infrastructure and expanding training to scale up life-saving services.
“Transplantation is the most noble surgery—it restores not just life, but dignity and hope,” Prof. Lal remarked. He urged young surgeons to master the fundamentals of surgery before specialising, emphasizing that the discipline requires “unwavering dedication.”
The conference also honored pioneers of the field, including Prof. S. N. Mehta, Prof. Mukut Minz, and Dr. Vatsala Trivedi, who shared their early struggles with limited resources and gender bias. Prof. Ashish Sharma, Head of Renal Transplant Surgery at PGIMER, concluded the session by reaffirming the institute’s commitment to advancing transplant sciences.
