Project Yojak (Lahaul-Spiti): A high-level media delegation recently visited the Border Roads Organisation’s (BRO) Project Yojak to witness the grit and engineering marvels behind India’s high-altitude infrastructure. Formed after the iconic Atal Tunnel’s completion, Project Yojak is now the backbone of the Manali–Keylong–Leh axis, ensuring it remains a lifeline throughout the year.
During the briefing, BRO officers highlighted the extreme conditions where jawans work in temperatures plunging to -30°C. The focus has now shifted to the Nimmu–Padum–Darcha (NPD) axis, featuring the upcoming Shinku La Tunnel. Once completed, this 4-5 km tunnel will provide a crucial third all-weather route to Ladakh, ending the seasonal isolation of the Zanskar Valley.
The media was also briefed on BRO’s recent “War-Footing” responses. In March 2026, BRO teams successfully rescued over 200 stranded vehicles near the Atal Tunnel within 12 hours during heavy snowfall. Similarly, following last year’s flash floods, engineers restored the damaged Manali–Keylong highway in record time, proving Project Yojak’s vital role in national security and regional tourism.
