Sidhivinyak times: Shimla l In a landmark development for organ donation in India, PGIMER Chandigarh has successfully facilitated a *Donation after Circulatory Death*, resulting in both kidneys being transplanted and giving new life to two patients suffering from end-stage renal failure. The donation came after a young male patient, critically injured in a road accident on November 21, 2025, suffered a sudden cardiac arrest and could not be revived despite intensive care efforts. Following the cessation of cardiac activity and adherence to national DCD protocols, the family made the courageous decision to donate his organs, turning a moment of profound grief into a life-saving opportunity for others. Prof. Vivek Lal, Director of PGIMER, praised the family’s extraordinary resolve, emphasizing that such acts highlight the growing importance of DCD in India. “The family’s decision has not only saved two lives but also strengthened the journey of DCD as a vital pathway for organ donation in the country,” he said.

Prof. Vipin Koushal, Medical Superintendent and Nodal Officer, ROTTO North, noted that this is the 20th DCD donation facilitated by PGIMER and the third this year, underlining the institute’s leadership in promoting ethically sound and medically robust organ donation practices.The case also underscores the expanding role of DCD in increasing deceased organ donation rates, particularly in situations where brain stem death criteria cannot be applied.
