Sidhivinayak taimes Shimla। PGIMER (Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research) has set a national benchmark by providing advanced and complex surgeries under the Ayushman Bharat–Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY), making high-end healthcare accessible to the most vulnerable sections of society. Addressing the media, PGIMER Director Prof. Vivek Lal stated that Ayushman Bharat is not just a financial protection scheme, but a major systemic reform transforming healthcare delivery across India. He emphasized that PGIMER has played a leading role in implementing the scheme effectively and ensuring that even the most critical medical procedures are available to patients without financial burden. Prof. Lal highlighted that PGIMER records one of the highest numbers of Ayushman Bharat beneficiaries in the country. A significant share of the institute’s complex procedures, including kidney transplants, spine surgeries, and joint replacements, are being performed under the scheme, with outcomes comparable to global standards. He also stated that the indigenous and Ayushman-approved implants used at PGIMER meet stringent international quality norms, ensuring that affordability does not compromise quality.

The Director further explained that PGIMER has strengthened its service delivery through Ayushman Bharat 2.0 by introducing end-to-end digitization, biometric verification at admission, and seamless bedside delivery of medicines. He added that extended operation theatre timings from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., along with 24×7 emergency OT services, have significantly reduced surgical waiting times. Prof. Lal also mentioned that PGIMER’s extensive AMRIT pharmacy network ensures uninterrupted availability of medicines and implants at highly subsidized rates. Concluding his address, Prof. Lal reiterated that government-funded healthcare schemes succeed only when backed by institutional commitment and professional ethics. “At PGIMER, we do not question who the patient is; our duty is to ensure that every needy patient receives the best possible care,” he said, underscoring the institute’s dedication to providing world-class treatment with zero out-of-pocket expenses.
