Sidhivinayak time’s Shimla Panjab University is preparing for its 73rd Convocation on December 13, with the Vice President of India and University Chancellor, Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan, giving final approval to this year’s Honoris Causa and PU Ratna awardees. In a review meeting held earlier today, PU Vice Chancellor Prof. Renu Vig evaluated the arrangements with senior university officials and committee heads. The ceremony will be presided over by Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Sh. Gulab Chand Kataria.This year’s honorary degrees will recognise leading figures from science, literature, law and academia. Supercomputing visionary Dr Vijay P. Bhatkar distinguished physicist Prof K. N. Pathak former Supreme Court judge Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel , and celebrated author Dr Amitav Ghosh will all be conferred Honoris Causa Degrees. Dr Bhatkar, a Padma Bhushan awardee and the force behind India’s PARAM supercomputer initiative, will receive the Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) for his contributions to supercomputing, digital literacy and institution building. Prof Pathak, a former PU Vice Chancellor known for his work in condensed matter physics and academic leadership, will also be awarded the Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) Justice Goel, recognised for his influential judgments in constitutional and environmental law during his tenure as a Supreme Court judge and later as Chairperson of the National Green Tribunal, will be honoured with the Doctor of Laws (Honoris Causa) Acclaimed novelist and thinker Dr Amitav Ghosh, recipient of the Jnanpith Award and Padma Shri, will be felicitated with the Doctor of Literature (Honoris Causa) for his impactful writings across fiction and non-fiction.

The university will also present its prestigious PU Ratna awards. Zoho Corporation founder and Padma Shri awardee Dr Sridhar Vembu has been selected for the Udyog Ratna for pioneering decentralised tech innovation and expanding software education through Zoho Schools. The Vigyan Ratna will go to renowned chemist Prof Pradeep Thalappil of IIT Madras for his breakthrough work in nanochemistry and water purification technologies. Olympic shooter and PU alumnus Sarabjot Singh will receive the Khel Ratna in recognition of his international achievements, including podium finishes at the World Championships, Asian Games and the Paris 2024 Olympics. The Sahitya Ratna will be awarded to writer-philosopher Amarjit Grewal whose bilingual literary work spans poetry, drama and critical thought.The University stated that the 73rd Convocation will celebrate not just academic achievement, but also national contributions in science, public service, literature and sports.
