Sidhivinayak time’s shimla During a Lok Sabha discussion held to commemorate 150 years of the national song Vande Mataram, BJP MP and former Union Minister Anurag Singh Thakur launched a strong critique of the Congress party, alleging that it has consistently politicised and undermined the legacy of the song. Thakur described Vande Mataram as a unifying force that inspired generations of freedom fighters, while asserting that opposition to it stems from what he called a “League mentality” inherited from the pre-independence political climate.Thakur argued that Vande Mataram was never intended to be a religious or divisive composition, but rather a celebration of India’s cultural spirit and national pride. He accused the Congress of having truncated the original composition under Jawaharlal Nehru’s leadership and claimed that this decision amounted to diluting the essence of the song. He further linked the issue to broader historical grievances, asserting that such actions were undertaken to appease community-based political pressures at the time.

Citing the contributions of revolutionaries such as Bhagat Singh, Khudiram Bose, Ram Prasad Bismil, and many others, Thakur emphasised that Vande Mataram had served as a rallying cry throughout India’s freedom struggle. He also highlighted its artistic and cultural significance, referencing its performance by Rabindranath Tagore and endorsements by noted musicians and writers across the country. Reiterating that both Vande Mataram and the national anthem Jana Gana Mana command deep respect, Thakur said the national song continues to evoke unity and patriotism. He concluded by urging all political parties to rise above what he termed “vote-bank calculations” and treat Vande Mataram as a shared national heritage rather than a point of contention
