A 59-year-old mid-day meal worker was brutally murdered on the premises of Government Senior Secondary School, Chanaur, under Dadasiba Police Station in Kangra district on Thursday (12 feb )afternoon.
According to a special press release issued by Mayank Chaudhary, Superintendent of Police, Police District Dehra, the incident occurred around 12:20 p.m. on February 12. The deceased, Sulochana Devi, wife of late Vishwamber Das and a resident of village Chanaur, Tehsil Dadasiba, was attacked with a sharp weapon while she was sitting at the entrance of the school kitchen.
She was immediately rushed to the Community Health Centre, Dadasiba, in critical condition, where doctors declared her brought dead.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the accused, Roshan Kumar alias Monu (45), son of Vivek Ram and a resident of Chanaur village, allegedly assaulted the victim with a sharp weapon on the school premises. The attack reportedly took place in the presence of school staff and children, causing panic on the campus.
Demonstrating presence of mind and courage, members of the school staff reportedly pelted stones at the accused in an attempt to stop him, forcing him to flee the spot. Acting swiftly, police formed four special teams and apprehended the accused within about half an hour near a temple close to his residence. The weapon used in the crime has also been recovered.
A case has been registered at Dadasiba Police Station vide FIR No. 12/26 dated February 12 under Section 103 of the Indian Penal Code.
The post-mortem examination of the deceased was conducted on Friday at Dr. Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College, Tanda, after which the body was handed over to the family.
The accused was produced before the Court of the Judicial Magistrate First Class, Kangra, on February 13 and has been remanded to five days of police custody. He will be presented again before the court on February 17.
SP Mayank Chaudhary stated that the Dehra Police District is meticulously collecting and preserving all physical, documentary, and scientific evidence. A thorough, impartial, and fact-based investigation is underway, and further legal proceedings will follow in accordance with the law.
The shocking incident has sent waves of grief and concern across the local community.
