Sidhivinayak taimes Shimla। The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), Government of India, has commended the Scientific Support Group (SSG) at PGIMER, Chandigarh, for developing a pioneering Certificate Course on Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) specifically designed for tobacco testing laboratories. The recognition came during the On-site Consultative Meeting held on 29 January 2026 alongside the 7th National Conference on Tobacco or Health at AIIMS Raebareli. Dr. Avinash Sunthlia, Deputy Additional Director General of the National Tobacco Control Programme, described the course as a “global first” initiative that will help ensure that India’s National Tobacco Testing Laboratories (NTTLs) maintain high standards and generate reliable data crucial for policy-making and public health protection. The course aims to build technical competence among laboratory personnel involved in tobacco product testing and analysis. Dr. Sonu Goel, convener of SSG and Professor at PGIMER’s Department of Community Medicine and School of Public Health, emphasized the importance of the GLP manual developed in collaboration with leading institutions across the country.

This initiative seeks to strengthen the analytical and research capacity of the four existing NTTLs and expand similar capabilities to other potential laboratories nationwide. The curriculum, designed through extensive expert consultations, includes active learning methods such as group discussions, case studies, and problem-solving exercises to ensure practical application in laboratory settings. The consultative meeting brought together researchers, policymakers, subject matter experts, and representatives from premier institutions such as MoHFW, Vital Strategies, NAMS, JIPMER, ICMR, NIMHANS, AIIMS Delhi, PHFI, and accredited laboratories across India. This GLP certificate course marks a key milestone in India’s tobacco control efforts by strengthening the scientific foundations required for robust tobacco product regulation and evidence-based decision-making.
