Chandigarh, March 25: Panjab University today celebrated the remarkable achievements of its athletes at the Annual Sports Prize Distribution Function for the 2025–26 session by distributing cash awards worth approximately ₹2 crore to outstanding sportspersons, coaches, and managers. The event, organised by the Directorate of Sports, saw SGGS College, Chandigarh, dominate the A-Division (Men) with 17,753 points to lift the prestigious Sir Shadi Lal Trophy, while MCM DAV College, Sector 36, emerged as the leader in the A-Division (Women) with 12,497 points to claim the Pt. Balans Trophy. GGDSD College, Sector 32, followed closely as the runner-up in both the Men’s and Women’s A-Division categories, with DAV College, Sector 10, and the Panjab University Campus securing third-place honours respectively.
In the B-Division, Khalsa College, Garhdiwala, took the top spot for men, while Rayat College of Law, Railmajra, won the Dr. G.S. Dhillon Trophy for the women’s category. The Education Colleges under the C-Division saw a clean sweep by the Government College of Education, Sector 20, which secured first place in both the men’s and women’s sections.
The function was presided over by Vice Chancellor Prof. Renu Vig, who congratulated the awardees and assured them of the university’s complete support in their athletic journeys. Renowned cricketer Yograj Singh attended as the Chief Guest and shared an emotional reflection on his long association with Panjab University, credited the institution for shaping his career, and urged the young athletes to always respect their teachers and alma mater. He highlighted the vital role of discipline in sports, citing the journey of his son, Yuvraj Singh, and revealed his own early beginnings in athletics before transitioning to cricket. The ceremony, which also featured Dronacharya awardee Jeevanjot Singh as the Guest of Honour, was attended by senior university officials including the Registrar, Dean University Instructions, and Director Sports Dr. Rakesh Malik.
