Chandigarh: To strengthen the quality of diagnostic services, a ‘Gunvatta Yatra’ focused on “Promotion of ISO 15189 Accreditation in Clinical Laboratories” was organized at PGIMER, Chandigarh. The event was conducted by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL), under the aegis of the Quality Council of India (QCI), in collaboration with PGIMER’s Department of Medical Microbiology.
Chief Guest Dr. Digambar Behera, President of the National Academy of Medical Sciences and former Dean of PGIMER, underscored that reliable diagnostics are the backbone of modern healthcare. He highlighted that obtaining accreditation is not just a one-time achievement but a continuous commitment to patient safety and clinical excellence.
The program was convened by Dr. Vikas Gautam, who played a pivotal role in securing NABL accreditation for the Department of Medical Microbiology back in 2014. The event was coordinated by Dr. Abhishek Sharma and the QCI team, drawing active participation from faculty members and healthcare professionals across the Tricity.
The primary goal of the initiative was to sensitize laboratory experts on the importance of ISO 15189 accreditation, which ensures accuracy, reliability, and global parity in diagnostic results. As a premier tertiary care institute, PGIMER is steadily advancing its quality-assurance goals. Currently, several departments, including Medical Microbiology, Hematology, and the HIV laboratory (Immunopathology), are NABL-accredited, with many other departments in the process of achieving this gold standard.
