Kangra Deputy Commissioner Hemraj Bairwa on Friday clarified that there is no shortage of domestic LPG cylinders in the district, and that supplies remain adequate with the distribution system functioning smoothly.
He said recent international developments, particularly tensions involving Iran and Israel, have triggered unnecessary concern among the public. This has led to panic booking of LPG cylinders, causing a temporary spike in demand.
“Under normal conditions, the district’s daily consumption ranges between 7,500 and 7,700 cylinders. However, since March 10, this has risen to nearly 9,000–10,000 cylinders per day, purely due to precautionary overbooking and not because of any supply shortage,” he said.
Despite the administration’s assurance, several residents have reported delays in receiving cylinders. Ghanshyam Lal, a professor in Dharamshala, said that although he booked a cylinder over two weeks ago, delivery has not reached his locality. He alleged that cylinders are being sold directly from the stores . Similarly, Sheila Devi, who runs a paying guest facility, said she has been forced to use firewood for cooking due to non-availability of LPG. Retired government official M.L. Sharma expressed concern over possible hoarding or black marketing, stating that better monitoring could ensure timely supply to all consumers.
Reiterating the administration’s position, the Deputy Commissioner maintained that there is no disruption in supply and that all gas agencies are receiving regular stock. He urged citizens not to fall prey to rumours and to book LPG cylinders strictly as per actual requirement to avoid artificial shortages.
He also advised consumers to avoid crowding at agency warehouses, adding that home delivery and distribution through designated points are being carried out as per route charts set by the district administration. Consumers have been requested to collect their cylinders at scheduled times and locations.
At present, three LPG gas agencies are operational in Dharamshala and 37 in the entire district.
