Sidhivinayak time’s Shimla The district administration of Lahaul Spiti has announced measures to address the rising stray dog population across urban and rural areas. In a meeting chaired by Deputy Commissioner Kiran Bhadana, officials from the Animal Husbandry, Health, Education, and Panchayati Raj departments, along with Panchayat representatives, discussed a comprehensive action plan to ensure public safety and animal welfare.The Deputy Commissioner emphasized that the growing number of stray dogs has become a significant concern for both sanitation and public safety. As part of the initiative, an Animal Birth Control (ABC) Center will be established in the Udaipur sub-division. Animal Husbandry officials confirmed that suitable land has been identified and a proposal has been submitted to higher authorities. The center is expected to help control the dog population humanely, reduce human-animal conflicts, and prevent the spread of rabies and other diseases.
Officials were instructed to identify high-incidence areas of dog bites and prioritize sterilization in these locations, working closely with Panchayat representatives. Additionally, buildings of closed schools may be repurposed temporarily as dog shelters, with Panchayats providing food for the animals during their stay. The administration also directed a focus on public awareness and safety. School officials will educate students on ways to protect themselves from dog attacks, while parents are advised to dress children in protective clothing. Measures to keep public spaces, including bus stands, free from stray dogs were also outlined, including the construction of boundary walls around schools, health centers, sports facilities, and bus stations. Nodal officers will be appointed to ensure cleanliness and monitor stray dog activity around these premises. Deputy Commissioner Bhadana reiterated that the district administration is committed to implementing these measures swiftly and effectively, balancing public safety with humane treatment of animals.
